(1) To become more proficient in reading English, especially reading on the web (2) To be able to read efficiently using reading skills such as scanning, skimming, and predicting, (3) To build strong vocabulary (4) To be more proficient in using computers and the Internet for in-class and self-study (5) To enjoy reading!
Textbook
Reading Power. Longman.
Grades
Attendance: 30%. If your attendance is less than 60%, you will fail automatically.
Reading Journal: 25%. I am hoping you will find reading fun through this activity! You are expected to read for ½ hour every week as homework. We will have a reading test in the first class to determine the appropriate level. Please go to the library and get a copy of Graded Reader. Choose a book from your level. You will write a Reading Journal which includes a summary of the story, what you thought about the story, and the new words you learned with definitions. Please post this journal BEFORE you come to class on the following dates:
Quizzes: 25%. Every week, there will be a quiz at the beginning of the class. The quizzes will include new words, new phrasal-verbs, and reading skills from the previous lessons. The first quiz will not be graded, because you don’t know what type of quiz until you take one!
Exams: 20%. This will be explained in class.
